A great result under the circumstances with no subs and Adam. Kia, Ben and Callum not fully match fit due to illness and injuries. The team showed tremendous character to grind out a result winning a penality shootout 4-3.
Callowbrook took the lead early on in the first half. There were not many noticable performances in the first half with both teams matching each other across the pitch apart from a few half chances created by both sides.
We had the better of the second half attacking down the hill and put the opponents under constant pressure with our attacking play. Adam scorred from a free kick to level the scores at 1-1 . Ryan was having a great game in the middle . Lee hit the side bar from his powerful shot. Ben was clear on goal but was unable to beat their goalie who made a tremendous save to deny Ben his goal. Alex came of his line well on couple of occasions to deny them the lead. Cal , Aiden, Kia and Thomas also contributed to our attacking play in the second half. The match ended 1-1. We were now into extra time.
The score remained the same during the extra time . The dreaded Penality shoot out loomed ahead. We did not start off well when Ben missed our first penality . It went over the top bar. The opposition put their's away and were ahead 0-1. The pressuer was back on us again. But like true heroes, Ryan, Lee, and Adam slotted their penalities and we were leading 4-3 as Alex managed to save one of their pens. The supporters were now quaking in their boots, some were unable to look, it was really tense out there.
The pressure was really on Cal who had to score for us to win the penality shootout. But unfortunatly , he missed when he skied his shot. We were now into sudden death situation . Luckly i had kept a few of the players who could shoot behind for this occasion. Thomas, Steven and Kiki.
Fiirst one to miss would lose this cup tie for the team. Pressure ! , what pressure for the rock of the team - Thomas , who kept his cool and slotted the ball into the right corner. An excellent pen under pressure. The opposition player then missed his pen . The ref blow his whistle . It was all over . we had won. What a relief.?
The players did not know what was happening until i shouted at them that we had won it.
They then ran across shouting and screaming with arms in the air to celebrate with Alex , who by this time was trying his best to get away from the hurd of players rushing towards him. But Alex was finally nailed to the ground by rest of the players A great result for the lads.
Man Of the Match Allex Guthridge
Alex is really growing in confidence as a great goalie in front of these big goals, Its a credit to his ability how he has adapted so quickly and is making excellent saves in the matches.
His penality save together with his saves during the game makes him a clear favourite for this award. Adam. Lee and Ben were also close contenders
